Why gender equality in tech and gaming companies still matters
Technology and gaming are built for everyone. Careers in these industries are not.
Gender equality in tech and gaming remains a critical challenge, particularly when it comes to pay, progression, and leadership representation. Despite public commitments to diversity and inclusion, gender pay gaps continue to shape who advances, who leads and who gets rewarded.
Our report, Who Gets to Play? Gender Equality in Tech and Gaming Companies analyses gender pay gap reporting and workplace data across major technology and gaming organisations. The findings show that women remain underrepresented in senior roles and overrepresented in lower-paid positions, with bonus gaps often significantly wider than hourly pay gaps.
Why gender pay gaps persist in tech and gaming
The data shows that progression structures often widen inequality rather than reduce it. As careers advance, gaps increase, particularly in gaming companies where leadership and creative roles remain heavily male-dominated. Even in organisations where average pay gaps appear smaller, structural barriers around performance assessment, bonus allocation, and leadership access remain.
For companies creating technology and games used by global audiences, these gaps represent more than internal issues. They affect innovation, culture, reputation, and long-term sustainability.
What leaders need to do differently
Closing gender pay gaps requires more than policies or annual reporting. It requires:
- Transparent progression and promotion frameworks
- Fair, standardised performance and bonus processes
- Targeted future talent and leadership development programmes
- Clear accountability for leaders, supported by measurable data
These actions are essential for organisations serious about inclusion, performance, and trust.
